Font Analysis

Lyall Young

The bold font and the capitals letters are used to make the title stand out and also emphasise the word ‘Taken’. The emphasis on the title of film is implying that something or someone is taken and the movie will be about somebody getting it back.

The size of the text is very big on the poster to make the title the main attraction on the poster. The title is used to explain the film in only a few letters. The use of the text being on the side of the poster and the black background behind it doesn’t follow the normal codes and conventions of a thriller movie poster as the title is not at he top and it is on the side and going down.

The font used on the Jurassic Park poster is actually bold thanks to white borders put around the letters and this will attract a person's view to the title of the poster straight away. It takes up a significant portion of the poster which makes it eyecatching and visually pleasing.

The red outline combined with the black background and red logo suggests that this is a thriller movie as dark colours are used and the logo of the T-Rex is edgy and terrifying. Fear is usually instilled in the viewer of thriller movies and this poster is no exception.

The red font makes the writing standing out as it is a bright red. The use of this colour makes the word taken very hard to be missed by the audience. Also the red implies that there may be violence or blood and also death in the movie this suggest that the movie is a thriller as there is violence and maybe a mystery due to the dark shadows around the font.

The shape of the outline used gives the poster a tribalistic feel which is relevant as the movie is named Jurassic Park. The Jurassic period was over 65 million years ago  and this meas that the font of the poster is appropriate and also accomodates the title of the film very well. The distinct style will again draw attraction towards the title when a viewer looks at the poster.

The colour of the text also contrasts with a rather plain background. The black background and the red text with a white outline actually accomodate each other very well as this contrast boldens and brightens the text of the poster and makes it clear enough to see infront of the large T-Rex silhouette. The colours and contrast of black and red suggest that this is a movie consisting of thriller elements such as mystery, death and fear.

On this poster you see the logo of the original film remade to modernise it with the colours from the original logo being replaced with more mysterious ones.

Also there is a dark mist or fog surrounding the logo, which let’s us, know that it is a thriller as the fog is quite murky and mysterious.

This poster doesn’t contain many colours  and lacks in design but in doing this it  makes the audience not know what to expect with this film.

The font is bold and eye catching as it stands outAlso there aren’t many images on this poster and the only creature on it is the fossil of the t-rex which has been one of the constants in the series.

The font was used very carefully and correctly and it is a suitable size for the posterCompared to the dark mysterious background.

Analysing posters enabled our group to be able to realise how posters can immediately notify the audience about the genre(s) in the film and also how 'less can be more' and simplicity can be extremely effective in conveying particular messages and themes that a film is supposed to get across to the audience. It also gave us ideas on the colour and tones that we could use in our short two minute opening to a thriller film as many of the posters we personally analysed, had dark colours and were in some ways very plain (ie the Jurassic World and Jurassic Park poster).
